Stranded

A sea of snow has washed up on my porch where I'm lounging in the sun like a beach bum on vacation. Should I take the plunge, wade out into it? I might need a boat to reach the other side of the yard. I might see a polar bear.
There is no shore in this high tide of white. I'm surrounded. Birds easily hop on top of it. Squirrels chase each other like kids out of school.
My house is like an ark stocked with everything I need to wait out the flood. One day melting icicles pour through drain pipes like tide rushing into pools. The next, the scene is a shinning sheet of sparkling ice, frozen in place.
Anchored on an ocean as solid as the moon, I'm like an Eskimo astronaut, covered from head to toe in my puffed-up hooded down suit, making exploration treks to the mailbox. News from the outside world.

It seems such a lovely place to be stranded and you make it sound like so much fun. The news from the outside world will wait.....it isn't nearly as nice as squirrels playing.
Stay warm!!

The photo is of a house I saw on one of my beyond-the-mailbox excursions into town. I thought it went well with the feeling of this piece and I loved the way the camera made a spot that looks like a full moon.
I do enjoy the treacherous beauty this season offers. And a real winter for a change. Glad to have power back too!

I saw on the news this morning (after all this time) that you guys had had a bad ice storm! We had some black ice last night, which I fell out of my car onto and I wasn't even drinking!

Ice storms are common here. Being on the southern northern line of the country, with rain in the south and snow to the north of us, we get some of both and often it comes as freezing rain and ice.

You might just sip some hot chocolate and pour just a little trail to the mailbox? That photo looks cold and warm at the same time...how do you do that?

Great writing, Colleen. So glad your power is back---makes the ice a bit easier to bear.

So poetically put! I've not ventured out into our snow yet... I hope it's still there tomorrow though :)
All the best for 2010!
