That's an assassin bug. They don't bother your vegetables; they're strictly carnivores. Be careful if you handle one, they have a long probiscus that folds under and they can give you a painful bite that carries a mild toxin (some folks can react severely to it though). They can also spread certain diseases. A friend of mind held one in his hand once and he said the bite felt like a jolt of electricity and really hurt.

Interesting series, Colleen. I wonder what the bug thought that button was?

Colleen,in my way of perception, the star, bug & sausage patties are all misplaced. They are out of their usual habitat.

Right! Also they're all oddly funny. The funniest part is that I didn't do the last picture on purpose. It just came out that way.

It's good that your camera's always within your grasp. Love the last picture too. My sunny side up egg never came out that way. Haha :)

What kind of bug is it?

A squash but I think. The kind I squash with my bear hands when they get on my butternut and summer crookneck.

That bug is a little too big, and the food is making me feel hungry! The star...is it a flag on the ground?

Wow, you're one brave bug squashin' gardener! With your bear hands? the ones with the long claws? Do you growl too?

That bug is scary!! A close encounter alright. It looks similar to the palmetto bugs you know the ones that are down in Florida. xox

Golly, are your bugs that big aleady? Or was this taken last year?

Wow even the name is scary. I googled image assassin bug and there were so many kinds. This one was lethargic, half dead or coming out of hibernation.
All the pictures were taken in the past few days. The star was on some faded cellophane wrapping paper: litter.
PS I have since sewed that purple button back on the pants they go to.

looks like the sausage would fit right into the holes for the eyes on the egg! what a hoot.

The egg broke and spread out onto the sausages. I pulled them out so they could brown better. They were in the egg! Mystery solved!
