From LaGuardia to Logan
New York City from the sky in broad daylight looks like the set of a Science Fiction movie. The island of concrete skyscrapers looming up from the earth at various heights is three times as wide as Boston and reminds me of a giant Giant’s Causeway, like the one in Northern Ireland. I find myself looking for the twin towers that I know won’t be there and for King Kong on the Empire State Building. I get a pang of anxiety watching cars and trucks merge onto highways, crisscross overpasses, and spin around mazes of rotaries. I never realized how much water there was around New York. I feel calmed looking at boats lined up in harbors or haphazardly dotting the shore. They look like pointed Dutch shoes waiting for someone to slip them on and walk away, escaping the hustle and the hassle of city driving.

i soooooo agree. the first time i flew into nyc (LaGuardia) it was surreal. nothing about what i saw looked real. i remember thinking how funny it looked that such a small piece of land could hold so much cement! and tall cement at that! the skyscrapers rose to meet us as we descended. a fascinating landing view!
hope you have fun on the coast with your family!

I like your imagery, Colleen. Everyone should get to fly over NYC at least once in their lives. It offers a unique perspective.

What about the Statue of Liberty? Is she still intact? From Planet of the Apes to Independence Day and all the other movies that have cinematically destroyed her, I just want to know if she's still there!
BTW, I hope the trip is great!

The Statue of Liberty was pointed out by the flight attendant but could only be seen by the side of the plane I wasn't on. I wanted to see it but couldn't!

I kept looking at the skyline wondering just where the twin towers would've been... AND I bought the fridge magnet (all my travels go on as a fridge magnet) with King Kong climbing the buildings!

I've only had a chance to fly once in my life and it was a short trip, but my face was glued to the airplane window the entire time. I loved seeing the world from up high.
Have a wonderful trip, Colleen!

It's been a very long time since I've seen New York City from a plane....You really don't see it when you fly in from the West because you fly into JFK...But La Guardia---Well, that is a different story....As a young person, I went around Manhattan Island in my brothers little Runabout Boat Down the East River and around the bottom of Manhattan and then up the Hudson...It was very very exciting....!
