13 Thursday: Mingle with Flamingos
1. Look what was right under my nose. After seeing a yard full of plastic lawn flamingo and going back later to get a picture but finding they were gone, the following day I went to play scrabble and found these in the Cafe Del Sol window box doing THIS.
2. Flamingos are to the south what penguins are to the north.
3. I recently looked at youtube videos of flamingos the way I imagine some people get sucked into porn. I watched for much longer than I intended and felt dirty afterwards, learning that the birds are endangered, overcrowded in places, being shot at by some, and trained as exhibits in zoos.
4. Experienced counsel recently given to my overbooked husband on how to pace himself: “Do only what’s right in front of you. Take one step at a time,” I said. He answered, “Yeah, but the difference between me and you is that my legs are longer.”
5. A Fragment From my Friend Fred: Does it matter at all to you that the next president has a clue about the world beyond politics? If so, consider another candidate than John McCain. Let his record speak for itself. From the Sierra Club… Washington, D.C.–In the 2007 National Environmental Scorecard released today by the League of Conservation Voters, John McCain receives a score of ZERO. McCain was the only member of Congress to skip every single crucial environmental vote scored by the organization, posting a score lower than Members of Congress who were out for much of the year due to serious illnesses–and even lower than some who died during the term. By contrast, the average Member of Congress scored a 53 in 2007. McCain posts a lifetime score of only 24.
6. Floyd has an Earth Day website HERE.
7. I once said: “If no one is going to quote me, I’ll quote myself. Is that a quote?” Looks like somebody does want to quote me – and other bloggers too. See HERE.
8. I actually have a poem with the word flamingo in it: The birds are back … checking out the real estate … a high-rise nest … on my porch rafter … a one room shelter … inaccessible to cats … with southern exposure … and a landing deck … The rest, with the flamingo part is HERE.
9. Current favorite word, besides flamingo: rigamarole
10. Strangest spam message this week: Frankly, the way things are right now, I'm not sure I'd want to play myself in my very own movie of the week.
11. “Hello.” It was Mara. I said, “My answering machine is full so I was forced to answer the phone. It says FL which is either means FULL or Florida," I said to her. “It could mean Floyd,” she answered.
12. Recently said by Colleen to Joe: Life is just one big field trip that I’m taking good notes on.
13. Floyd’s Own American Idol. She made it to the top 50. Read more HERE.

5. Hard to believe McCain's that bad given the fact he's from AZ. You'd think he'd have some sense of reverence for the environment.
9. Always love your favorite word picks. They make me smile when I say them. This one not only sounds fun to say, but I noticed that when I said it it made my tongue tingle.
12.Great line!

I'm so glad I'm on this big field trip with you 'cause I always "note" stuff I might have missed without the help of your point of view. (12. Recently said by Colleen to Joe: Life is just one big field trip that I’m taking good notes on.)
And I may have to add "rigmarole" to my own word list. (9. Current favorite word, besides flamingo: rigmarole.)
I came back to finish reading your thirteen after getting waylaid halfway through (7. I once said: “If no one is going to quote me, I’ll quote myself. Is that a quote?” Looks like somebody does want to quote me – and other bloggers too). That's when I started following links and blogging about what I found. Since your server throws away my comments if I include links, you'll just have to click on my name to see what I posted about you and where reading your blog led me this morning.

I agree with Bonnie - sometimes I get lost following your links and forget to come back and comment. Congrats on the Blogtations! Love your 13 as always, you are so creative.

Hm, I always thought it was rigAmarole. So, of course, I just had to go look it up. Your way is the preferred way to spell it, mine just a variation. Well then! First judgment vs judgement annoys me this week. Now rigmarole! (my mom uses rigmarole a lot. I love that word!)
Posted by: kacey | March 6, 2008 7:40 AM
What interesting musings. I'm going to have to add "rigmarole" to my cool word list. Happy TT!
Posted by: Brenda ND | March 6, 2008 8:17 AM
I always say rigamarole too, Kacey. I guess my spell check changed it to the preferred version.
I'm on my way, Bonnie. My blog doesn't always junk comments with links but sometimes it does.

# 5 given what's in the stack . experience and voting - Hillary is a mile in front of the other 2- Iguess your qualification for president is to vote present and not come in on any issues re:"Obama- notice the media has pinned him to not one hard question ???

And while you are reading MY blog, I'm ba-a-a-aaack! I came back to read any additional comments. Gotta add my two cents worth here on "rigamarole" vs. "rigmarole." I've always heard and said "rigamarole," so I mis-read it here. When I looked it up, though, I got both versions, saw that yours actually said "rigmarole" and used that spelling in my comment. If Kacey and Colleen and I all use "rigamarole," then who's tipping the "preferred" version in the other direction, huh? Now I wonder which spelling most of our readers prefer.
Posted by: Bonnie Jacobs | March 6, 2008 8:56 AM
haha..have missed your musings. I used "rigmarole" in conversation with my husband this morning. I say it "rigUmarole". That might be a southern accent...not sure.
Love,
Susan

Okay. I'm going to change it.

13 dogs at the pound. The ACO called to say he was about to start "cleaning house", meaning killing dogs. I pulled one for the Humane Society and cried for all the rest.

That info about McCain is scary, Colleen. THANKS for posting it.

Thanks for stopping by this morning, Colleen. So you're a flamingo maven...I have friends who have every flamingo thing you can imagine and some you might be too embarrassed to imagine. I love 'em. They really are majestic birds in the flesh and feather.
Maybe someone ought to do McCain the favor of one of those flamingo parties on the lawn. That's when you hire someone to load up the front lawn with plastic renditions of the pink wonder. And a banner: "McCain, You're a Pain in My Long Neck."
Have a great day!

Why would such a colorful poet, philosopher, field trip note taker not be fascinated by flamingos. Congrats on being quoted. You go Miss Thing. Your musings always amuse and amaze me.

My husband has way too many things with flamingos... but he calls them penguins and vice versa. Makes no sense to me but I go along with it.

#9 You gave a god word.
#3 guess the phrasing means you don't have some good recommendations for the other?
That quote site is a find!

Happy TT!
Yes, another creative one.

That was very interesting about McCain. It's a pity those facts aren't more widely known. Too many people simply point to his war record. he was undoubtedly a brave soldier and endured a terrible hardship as a POW but that has absolutely zero relevance as to his ability to run a country. Still, with luck he won't be president anyway!

totally true flamingo story.
I used to live in the Disney planned community of Celebration, FL. We had strict regulations about what we could accessorize our exteriors with. Some "vandal" was going around, putting "illegal" pink lawn flamingoes in people's front yards. The flamingoes would go from yard to yard, inciting reprimands. We did eventually find out who was doing it. It was the town preacher. (not kidding)

Oh, man. That has got to go in a story someday.
Posted by: colleen | March 6, 2008 8:28 PM
so is rigamarole going to be the subject of your next post? I haven't seen that word in print since I can remember...and I can't remember.

That was an interesting roundup. I especially enjoyed the National Geographic clip. And how thrilling is it to have your very own American Idol potential winner!

#5. "consider another candidate than John McCain"
Given that McCain has been campaigning along with the fact that the "Green" vote will mostly go with the Dems, it's little surprise that he received a low score this year. McCain has received past scores as high as the 60s, which puts him in line with Obama's 67 this year. This weak comparison is sort of like chastising the religious right for not voting for a pro-choice candidate.
I found it particularly disconcerting how the first commentor mentioned McCains age and "washed out" appearance. To me, the first reflects experience and wisdom, and the second, well, how would you look as a heroic surviving POW at his age? Very shallow comment.

Ohmygosh … I finally understand the comment you made at Small Reflections last week about flamingos. LOL
I’m sorry to be reading this post so belatedly, but life got away from me this week. Goodness, I need to think about a T-13 post for tomorrow …
Hugs and blessings,
