13 Thursday: I’d Like to Thank the Academy
1. I was recently sick and hadn’t been out in over a week. I was beginning to think I should make a dentist appointment just to get out of the house.
2. Strangest thing recently seen: At a training this past Saturday, related to the work I do with adults with disabilities, I went to the bathroom at the break and saw an hourglass egg timer on the back of the toilet. I’m still curious about it.
3. I had a hard time sitting and paying attention for the four hour training so I doodled and worked on my teapoems, which reminded me of scribbling poetry on scraps of paper many years ago when I worked at a factory. I still remember writing this line then: Bob Dylan had the highway blues … he wore pointed shoes …and kept his guitar always loaded.
4. Sometimes I run my fingers across the keyboard and pretend that it’s a piano.
5. I’ve never played an instrument, unless you want to count the diggeredo, which is a long hollow bamboo instrument you blow into. It sounds something like the sound of blowing into a conch shell, unless you’re not doing it right and then it just sounds like farting.
6. I now have a Hewitt Packard Case Manager, a nice guy named John who sent me a new printer when my old one got fried even though my year warranty was expired by one day. I guess the company thinks I’m a special case, either that or they want to keep my buying their ink cartridges, which cost about as much to refill as the cost of the original printer.
7. This was my favorite Academy Award acceptance speech, given by Alex Gibney who won for his documentary, Taxi to the Dark Side, about an Afghan taxi driver who was falsely imprisoned and then killed: Truth is, I think my dear wife Anne was kind of hoping I'd make a romantic comedy, but honestly, after Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib, extraordinary rendition that simply wasn't possible. This is dedicated to two people who are no longer with us, Dilawar, the young Afghan taxi driver, and my father, a navy interrogator who urged me to make this film because of his fury about what was being done to the rule of law. Let's hope we can turn this country around, move away from the dark side and back to the light.
8. I also liked Daniel Day Lewis’s acceptance speech for his best actor award. He began by thanking the academy for “whacking me with the handsomest bludgeon in town.” Then he said that his character “sprang like a golden sapling out of the mad beautiful head” of the movie’s writer and director Paul Thomas Anderson. Leave it to an Irishman to utter such poetry.
9. Classiest moment of the night: Although many of the thank you speeches were boring and I kept waiting for a streaker to liven things up, I loved it when host John Stewart brought best song co-writer back on the stage after a commercial break to say what she wanted to into the mic after the orchestra had initially cut her off.
10. Said with needles in my back to my acupuncturist: “I feel like a birthday cake.” I had just had moxa on my back (something like having a lit cigar held near your skin to improve the flow of energy) so was feeling a little lit up. “I’ll be back soon to blow you out,” my acupuncturist joked as he left the treatment room.
11. My poet friend Mara sent me THIS link to a ‘what kind of punctuation mark are you’ quiz. I came out a colon. “Well, at least it’s a committed form of punctuation, unlike the semi-colon,” I told her. And LOOK what Bonnie just posted on semi-colons. Seems you can get a lot of attention for using one correctly.
12. To celebrate Leap Year Brian Feldman, a performance artist from Florida, is going to do 366 12 foot leaps for 24 hours on February 29th.
13. Apparently, his blog is a performance piece as well.
Thursday headquarters is here. My other 13's are here. View more 13 Thursday’s here.

Hi, first time visitor here...you posted just ahead of me (I think). Enjoyed your list and hope you have a great weekend!

Now that's strange an egg timer on a toilet ?? I shouldn't have read that, I will think about it now the whole day to find an answer, lol !

I loved the co- writer as well so eboullient( sp) and genuine++++I'm a colon-- we get on well with semi- colons

That was a classy moment from Jon Stewart and I too doodle, though its usually just to get through the day and not just training

2. Perhaps they needed to set some time limits in there? Either than, or some people "work" better under pressure :-)
7. Mine too. It needed to be said. The Oscars have gone from being very political to having almost nothing to say. I was glad somebody did.
11. I'm a colon too. As for using proper punctuation: I take sort of a freestyle approach...partly because I don't know the rules very well and partly because I don't much care. Still, there's a part of me who admires good use of it like I admire eloquent speech.

I took the quiz and I'm a question mark. Makes sense.
Accupuncture? How did that work for you? Does it help?
Posted by: Poe | February 28, 2008 9:04 AM
I used to see my acupuncturist/Chinese Medicine practitioner regularly when I worked full time at foster care. Now my income has been reduced dramatically so I go less, when I really need it. My back went out recently and he's treating me for that so that it doesn't become chronic. I can't speak for all acupuncturists but this one is excellent, acupuncture being just one treatment modality in his black bag. In years past he did cranial sacrum on me for a head injury and for CFS a couple of times a month. It was helpful but no cure on that score. I don't think there is one anywhere.

#2 is hilarious!
and i hope i end up as a comma on that quiz. i'm obsessed with commas.

Colleen, I worry so that we are so far into the dark side that we may never be able to move to the light...I keep looking at the counter on my blog to see how much more time we have of "his" presidency and keeping my hopes up that he will not and cannot do any more damage than he has already done!
Thought that was classy of Jon Stewart...I've always felt they should cut to the chase and get rid of the junk the host says and the silly banter and let us hear what the winners have to say!
Don't you just love moxa? Other than it can sometimes smell like "pot" - oh, but who cares - it brings such relief. When I was with Scarlett we always had a box of it in our home and used it regularly on my poor aching back. We used to buy it at the Chinese market in Tampa. I miss that!

I'm glad you're feeling better. It's been a nasty season for colds and flu bugs! I did the punctuation quiz a while back and was a question mark ... I seem to recall I got along with commas best but don't hold me to it. The timer in the bathroom is certainly a ‘puzzlement’ … and if you ever find out more about it, please share. LOL
Hugs and blessings,

An hourglass egg timer on the back of the toilet? That's very, very strange...if you ever find out the reason why, pls share it here!
I am a colon too. And I am thankful to that one acupuncturist who got rid of my tennis elbow.
Hope you are feeling like your true self again! Happy TT!

I missed the awards (no TV) so I love your selections of speeches. In the media, I just hear about the stars/starlets and watch the dresses. (Timer may have been for potty training. I've heard this is a method that works.)
Happy TT!

Oh, don't make that dentist appointment....
I like the acceptance speeches you quoted. Yes, leave it to an Irishman. I enjoy your posts!

Hey Collen...Well, we certainly are of the same mind about the Highpoint of The Oscars with Jon Stewart. I LOVED that moment, too, when he brought back the other half of the composing team....I have two posts up with my Awards thoughts---if you get a chance....! (Just posted part 2, early this A.M.
I am fascinated by the Hour Glass on the back of the toilet...lol! I sure would love to know what the meaning of that is, too! (lol)
Keep feeling better and better, my dear.

10 is funny. Did Moxa help?
Egg timer. A person who is under time pressure for every moment of their life? Ticks help her focus on something and relax enough to go? Searching thru the backpack for menstrual things and that was on top and she forgot it? An art project to do random acts of egg timers. stashed all around town if you look?
Posted by: Pearl | February 28, 2008 3:53 PM
I find your blog also a performance piece as well. It's a great TT entry.
Posted by: TorAa Mirror | February 28, 2008 3:56 PM
An art project or performance piece, like putting plastic flamingos all over someone's yard, the new singing telegram.
Posted by: colleen | February 28, 2008 4:01 PM
I so need to try acupuncture.
I missed the Oscars, thanks for the highlights.
Posted by: Ampersand | February 28, 2008 4:12 PM
enjoyed your post and the references to speeches. going to do the quotation thing now! jennifer
Posted by: jennifer | February 28, 2008 4:26 PM
Apparently, I'm a dash.
I liked all the speeches and comments that you pointed out. I also find it puzzling that everyone was so hard on this year's broadcast, even tho they know about the writer's strike. I really liked John Stewart. Classy guy.
What flavor birthday cake are you?
Well, I have to dash.
~S :)

I never watch awards shows because I can't stand all that smug patting each other on the back. But that acceptance speech you quoted was very noble indeed. Egg timer in the loo? That is truly weird.

When my dad had to have a portion of his colon removed a few years ago as part of his treatment for colon cancer, the joke in the family was that he was going to become a semi-colon.
I only watched a bit of the Oscars this year... I haven't yet gotten around to seeing any of the Best Picture Nominees, but I do enjoy the Coen brothers' films so will have to check out "No Country for Old Men" soon. "Juno" looks like a good one, too.
Posted by: Jeanne | February 28, 2008 6:24 PM
P.S.: I'm a comma. Not surprised by that at all; I had professors in college who used to tell me I overused them in my papers.
Posted by: Jeanne | February 28, 2008 6:32 PM
colon here, too!
hourglass on toilet - for those who use the toilet as a temporary library - a timer to set so they don't monopolize the toilet too long? for those who are "on break" and must get back to work within a timely period? for the trainers who have given you guys work to do so THEY get back to your training by the time you finish! that is too funny. i hope we all figure out the possibilities.
Posted by: sky | February 28, 2008 7:28 PM
when i was a music major in college, someone came and did a diggeredo demonstartion and then let us try.... i just got the farting noise out of it. :)
Posted by: bluemountainmama | February 28, 2008 9:43 PM
The hourglass makes me wonder as well!
My favorite Oscar speech was Sally Fields': "You like me, you really like me!"
Thanks for visiting my TT.

Hi Colleen. I dropped by from Michele's on this crazy cold winter's night to comment specifically on your sixth point. You nailed it: they'd give away the printers if they could. The profits on ink cartridges are massive.
Our ink jet printer finally gave up the ghost a few weeks back. We got sick of crazy-high per-page ink costs, so we bought a color laser printer instead. It's an HP, and it's networkable. So I plugged it into my wireless router, and now I can print from any computer in the house. I felt so geeky when I first set it up!
I figure it'll pay for itself in less than a year, so it's worth the slightly higher up-front purchase cost.
Sorry, got a little carried away there :)

Maybe the person with the hourglass has a disability that they are trying to overcome....a disability where they want to take less time doing things that others can do quickly.

13. "I Shouldn’t Blog Here Right Now" ~ I love it! He does, however, link the reader to Google News. I wonder what THAT means.
11. I had to go find out what kind of punctuation mark I am before I could write this comment. I was halfway wanting to be a semicolon, just because, but I think I got the perfect mark for me: ???????????? I'm a question mark ... lol. I'm curious, love learning, excel in higher education, and get along best with the Comma. (Now who was that comma I noticed among the commenters? Oops, I'm acting exactly like an inquisitive question mark, being curious and asking questions.)
Jeanne, YOU are the comma! I love the play on words about your dad becoming a semicolon: "When my dad had to have a portion of his colon removed a few years ago as part of his treatment for colon cancer, the joke in the family was that he was going to become a semi-colon."
2. Pearl and Sky, I like your ideas about the egg timer, but my guess is that it had to do with training, like maybe the trainer planned to use it for a training exercise and forgot where she left it. Maybe that timer would have enlivened your boring day, Colleen, if only you had returned it to the leader.
Posted by: Bonnie Jacobs | February 29, 2008 8:28 AM
Well I thought it was interesting that we were at a training for working with people with disabilities who do have training objectives, but it was held in a conference room in a non-related public place. It was in the women's room and the trainer was a man. I did tell a few people when I came out and no one knew what to think.
Bonnie, did you notice that Jeanne gave us an example of how to correctly use the semi-colon?
Posted by: colleen | February 29, 2008 9:23 AM
No, Colleen, I missed it and had to go back and take a look at what Jeanne said:
"I'm a comma. Not surprised by that at all; I had professors in college who used to tell me I overused them in my papers."
Excellent! Thanks, Jeanne (and Colleen).

Hope YOU got to make a wish when he blew out the candles on your back! My husband does this too but with electrodes.
Hope you're all better.

I'm supposedly a colon but that doesn't make sense because I'm not AT ALL organized or any of the wonderful qualities they describe. But every time I go on that site I end up trying at least half a dozen other tests.
