Santa's Mid-life Crisis
I stopped believing in Santa Claus when I was six. Mother took me to see him in a department store and he asked for my autograph. ~ Shirley Temple Black
When you stop believing in Santa Claus is when you start getting clothes. ~ Unknown
Santa Claus wears a Red Suit...he must be a communist. And a beard and long hair...must be a pacifist. And what's in that pipe that he's smoking? ~ Arlo Guthrie
Santa is our culture's only mythic figure truly believed in by a large percentage of the population. It's a fact that most of the true believers are under eight years old, and that's a pity. ~ Chris Van Allsburg

Hi Colleen..
I wish you the Merriest of Christmases, and given your deep loss this year, I know it won't be the same...

Santa's just the metaphyscial embodiment of the joy from the real reason for the season. So, do I believe? Damn straight.
A very merry one to you and yours.

Well over the years he has come in to town at the end of the parade in a variety of vehicles. First it was the sleigh, the original mode of transportation even though it was often mounted on a trailer. Then he came in on a hook and ladder fire engine; no place for the reindeer but still quite large and impressive with the sirens going. But here he is stuffed in a convertible? It is a nice red convertible, probably an antique car....but the reindeer, the sleigh, the sirens, the pack...there is no room for that pack...no, no. Santa can't do deliveries in this. What if it stalls or runs out of gas somewhere in the backwoods of Montana? No, that would not do at all.
In case you can't tell, I believe. I had a brother nine years younger and then somewhere someone told me that if you didn't believe in Santa, the presents stopped...cold. Of course you have to believe. ;) Have a blessed Christmas.

Like your quotes about Santa and hope you and your family had a wonderful Christmas despite your recent loss.
On the way to NC from MI, we stopped at Tammarack on the West Virginia Turnpike (near Beckley), they had a guy who was great--with a real St. Nicholas (not the Coca Cola Santa) outfit. When I retire--I want his job. He even has a real white beard!
blessings.

Colleen, I checked out the link to santaclaus.com and found something rather disturbing. At the bottom of that page there are links one of them points to a male nude model web site. I thought you might want to know.
I love your writing and I will be back.

Happy Holidays, Colleen. Haven't blogged for a week for reasons discussed on my Dec. 25 post. Disagree, however that SC is our only myth. Need to include Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy, Harry Potter, governmental concern for our welfare, Creationism (sorry- Intelligent Design), and my idealized view of women. All these myths have a place and function in our society, but I personally prefer Santa Claus.
