Rag Rugs, Farm Girls and Feeds Sacks
Last week I was on my way to an upstairs meeting room at The Floyd Country Store to interview SustainFloyd director Mike Burton for a story of local foods initiatives when this photo-op stopped me in my tracks.
In a five minute stop, I learned that Farm Girls and Feed Sacks had formed in January, that they meet once a month, and currently have about 20 members. At this meet-up, the first of a two-part class, they were learning to braid rag rug chair pads. “The only requirement to be a member is that you have to wear an apron to meetings,” one of the members joked.
The Farm Girls is a Floyd chapter of MaryJanes Farm, a farm, a retail store, B&B, magazine, and online sisterhood of about 12,000. From the looks of her website, MaryJane seems like the Martha Stewart of farming, at least as far as marketing goes. But her resume is impressive and with a tagline of “simple solutions for everyday organic,” this photo-op and interview that followed was a Floyd line-up that made for a custom fit.
Note: Most of these photos were previously published in The Floyd Press on February 3, 2011.

My grandmother used to make these for her chairs.. they are most comfortable and give that wonderful feeling to the farm kitchen… Ah… memories of childhood to include the hand water pump at the edge of her sink.

Well this was a class, not a meeting, so I guess that’s why they are not wearing aprons. OR maybe the apron thing is just a joke.

I love this. Their rag rugs are so beautiful.
If the apron thing is true…I think that I could be persuaded to put one on to attend one of their meetings (if only I lived local!)

Darn it, Colleen…why did you have to tell me about this? There are so many neat things on that website…I’m going to be reading it for hours!
