13 Thursday in Pink Pants
1. When it comes to music, I tend to be monogamous. It only takes one good CD to keep me happy for a long time.
2. Right now I’m married to Nora Jones.
3. She says: “The poet’s are demanding their pay. They’ve left me with nothing to say.” Do you think I should apply?
4. I probably wouldn’t get the job. I’ve been writing so much more prose than poetry these days. Last April I said this: If I’m writing too much prose, I begin to need a vacation. Prose is like the day job and poetry is the rest of my life. ~ Finish reading Where Do Poems Come From HERE.
5. While walking to the mailbox, this came to mind: You can have all the right ingredients for a story but if you don’t add some good description to set the scene, it’s like making a soup without salt or spices.
6. If I really like what’s for supper, I put on my reading glasses so I can see it.
7. Is shtick the same thing as a shpiel? Is spiel the unwinding of persuasive speech like a thread unwinds from a spool? Is a hair across the ass the same thing as a hair out of place? ~ Questions found in my notebook.
8. Writing about Mrs. Pickle earlier in the week reminded me of the Fruitcake Lady, the elderly outspoken woman who regularly gave everyone a piece of her mind and advice on sex on "The Jay Leno Show" (and who recently passed away at the age of 95). THIS is some of the funniest footage I’ve seen. More about the Fruitcake Lady HERE.
9. After watching the treadmill dance video on U-Tube (one of my all time favorites) and seeing the pink pants one of the guys in it was wearing, I began to yearn for a favorite pair of pink pants that I had in my 20s. I hit the thrift shops and recently found a suitable pair (a perfect match to my pink raft).
10. Yesterday my husband called me up on the phone and said, “This is an accidental call. My phone just started dialing your number.” “What is this, Hal Call Home?” I asked him. After we talked for about 5 minutes, I said, “Okay, gotta go. Thanks for not calling me.”
11. Favorite quote about Bush’s recent speech to the country: "President Bush told Americans last night that failure in Iraq would be a disaster. The disaster is Mr. Bush's war, and he has already failed.” ~ The New York Times.
12. Watching some Democrats strongly oppose the escalation of the war in Iraq makes me want to ask them why they didn’t speak out more strongly before the start of the war. I don’t think a surge in troops is the issue as much as the war itself.
13. Do you know about Code Pink?
Thursday headquarters is here. My other 13's are here. View more 13 Thursday’s here.

Thanks for the wednesday night entertainment. That made me laugh out loud!

I fully agree with the New York Times !

Some very interesting thoughts here. Pink pants, though, are something that most people cannot pull off. I wish you luck with your's!
And, The Fruitcake Lady is completely awesome!

I'm totally the same with CDs, I can listen to the same one in the cars for weeks. Currently, it's U2 "18 Singles".
Posted by: Gayle | January 17, 2007 11:22 PM
Nice list. I enjoy Norah Jones also. She has a new cd coming out next week.
My 13 are up.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who listens to the same cd over and over. Or wears reading glasses sometimes when I eat. And thanks for the video links - it was good to laugh.

I agree w. the issue being about the war. What do you think about Obama running?
I listen to the same song until I can't stand it anymore. Right now I am into John Mayer. Norah is awesome.
When do we get a picture of the pink pants?

Great list. Happy T13

Obama is my kind of Democrat. I Haven't seen anyone with his charisma and stlye since Kennedy.
That's my knee with the pants on in the photo. They're cropped so I won't be wearing them any time soon.

I LOVE your weekly 13 lists! I love to follow the links and see where they lead me. Sometimes I have trouble finding my way back to leave a comment! Have a great day!

This is just eerie. Yesterday on the eliptical trainer I was listening to Lucinda Williams and I thought "I know Colleen loves Norah Jones, I wonder if she has any Lucinda Williams or would like a copy of my Lucinda cds." Then on my post today I mention treadmills too because I had tried closing my eyes and meditating while walking, which doesn't work. I almost broke my neck and got very sick.
And at the end of my post today I said if I would put a bumper sticker on my car it would read "Impeach Bush"....so we were on a lot of the same waves today!
I have snowflakes falling here now, do you???

And I forgot to mention that is just like my Composition book!

I'm in love with Thom York right now. Shtick is funny, but Shpiel is boring.
Posted by: Amy the Black | January 18, 2007 10:45 AM
I'm a monogamous CD listener, too! My husband gets frustrated sometimes, especially when I'm painting a piece that takes several days, I replay the same CD over and over and over. You have good taste, too. ;)
I don't think schtick and shpiel mean the same thing - at least they don't to me. If I have a schtick, it's a thing I do that you recognize. If I have a shpiel, I'm on a soapbox about something. Crazy what's happened to the english language! LOL
Happy thursday, I'm in this week, too!

I tend to keep the same cd in the car player for weeks too.
Have you tried Mary Gauthier yet? She has such a way with words it's just amazing...She tends to stay in my player untill the cd starts wearing out and I have to burn another copy from the original. Check out her lyrics at:

That Fruitcake Lady..hehe!
I am intimidated by poetry. Do I need to make every other line rhyme? Does it need to make sense? These are the questions that dog me. I do enjoy writing a haiku now and then. If you every give a poetry class, sing me up.
I get CODEPINK mailings regularly. Go Pinkies!

I'm getting a real musical education here. First by following Gary's link and listening to Mary Guathier. Her song "Mercy" was very touching and really appropriate for our times.
Then I found a great NPR inteveiw with Lucinda Williams, interspersed with bits of her songs. How come I've never heard of her? Wouldn't she be great for Floyd Fest, Deana? http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4767023
Both these women are excellent songwriters with soulful voices. Thanks!
I also love the way newcomer Corrine Bailey Rae sings (sort of like Nora Jones). http://www.corinnebaileyrae.net/

You do a good 13 - very interesting. I loved the pink link.
Thanks for sharing good info while being very entertaining.
Take care,
Frances

I do that with music too...get all into just one artist for a whole long time. Love Norah but don't have her new one yet.
I like your idea about including description as the salt and pepper of the story words.
Fruitcake lady is a hoot!

Good fyi.
I laughed at "Thanks for not calling me."

I laughed out loud also, at the Fruit lady!!! I only wish there were more questions to ask her.
John Mellencamp is coming out with a new CD too. I can't wait to hear it.

#9. the treadmill dance rocks!
#11. and 12. it's kind of like a fistfight, you may not have wanted it, but once you're in it, you're in it to win. now who's to blame?

Hey, enjoyed your post. I wrote my first 13 post today--after missing the last two Thursday's of the New Year. I don't yet have the hang of the whole thing, but I'll get there. I used to have a pair of red & white striped pants that I loved--when I was 25. Wished I still had them. Goodwill got them when I decided to clean my closet and eliminate some clothes that I thought I was too old to wear. ;) Thanks for your earlier comments.

Pink is my very favorite and you know how much I adore your raft. Your brain is an amazing place, Colleen. If you were my neighbor, I'd be camped out at your scrabble board too much.
Posted by: MommaK | January 18, 2007 9:42 PM
hahaha to # 6. I have to take mine off to really get a good look.
Number 10 is a riot too.
Actually - it's a very good list, as usual.

My Liam is like you, Colleen, very monogamous in his listening habits. He listened to Norah Jones' first CD every single night before bed for nearly a year.
This is the second place today I've seen Corrine Bailey Rae mentioned, so I'll have to check her out.
This is my current favorite YouTube thing. It's a Stephen Foster song, and this is one of my favorite renditions. Emmylou has a nice one, too, as does James Taylor on this CD with Edgar Meyer, Mark O'Connor and Yo Yo Ma. That CD was my music in the chemo chair yesterday

Fun list to read. Didn't know about Code Pink. I get stuck on one or two CD's for weeks on end.
