Thirteen Thursday

1. Yesterday I made a scrabble house-call to a friend’s house in Shawsville.
2. On the way, while driving, a can rolled into the street and I hit it. It didn’t have a chance.
3. My friend is an artist of many different mediums. I took pictures of her studio and her different art work stations.
4. When I got home I realized that I didn’t have any film in my camera. My digital camera isn’t working. If it was, I would have posted the beautiful sunny alcove in her kitchen where we played, and the scrabble board, a deluxe one, raised and set in wood. Her cat, who lay by the board the whole time we played, and her hands, with a ring on every finger, would be in the picture too.
5. A few days ago, I met another friend at a café in town. He suffers from a degenerative disease and has many other complications. He was worried and wanted to talk. He told me that the new Medicaid plan under the Bush Administration hurts people like him and that he will have to choose between food and medicine now.
6. I just heard that someone who attended the recent spoken word open mic was offended by the language in one reader’s poem. I’m wondering how I should feel about that.
7. Last night, I watched a movie with my husband, “The Human Stain” with Nicole Kidman and Anthony Hopkins. It had a surprise twist that I didn’t guess. I love when that happens.
8. My friend, who I played scrabble with, gave me a beautiful necklace she had made. I gave her a copy of each of my books.
9. An hour later, while checking out in Wal-Mart, I got a compliment on the necklace.
10. Last week, two birds got caught in my house. I just got one out and discovered there was another.
11. My family just went through and is still going through a family crisis. Somethings aren’t helpful to blog about, but how does a blogger go on as if nothing is happening?
12. My friend who I played scrabble with has cancer. I’m thinking about her a lot today.
13. I entered the “13 worst school pictures contest” over at Petroville. I really did pick out an ugly picture of myself, and I’m sort of worried that I’m going to win.

Kathy answeres: I agree. I didn't know how to write about what is going on, yet I felt I could not act as though nothing was different. I posted a few details over at my blog. Those who are interested can look in over at "A Particularly Persistent Point of View."

I don't think I want to play you at Scrabble! Sounds like you have lots of experience. As to the guy that was offended by the language? Well, he either doesn't have to come back, or he can just not like it. I don't think anyone should have to censor their work. Here's my 13.

Hello Michele sent me.

Was "The Human Stain" any good? I have a tendancy to choose the absolute WORST movies...so when someone recommends one, I jump on it!

Yes, I liked "the Human Stain." It had intrigue and great acting...and the then there was that twist! (Not to fond of Kidman's other movie "Birth," but I do think "The Interpeter" look good and want to see it.)

Poor can!

I'm sorry your camera didn't have film, your friend sounds very interesting and I'd've liked to have seen the pictures. I hope she battles the cancer successfully.

I'm also sorry about your other friend and am also worried about the Medicaid plan, for my parents, mainly.

Didn't much care for The Human Stain, and I wanted to, if that makes sense.

It's tough about your family...I'm in a similar situation with my Mom; lots of ongoing medical problems and financial problems, but I don't want to sound as if I'm the only one in the world with problems. But ... it is my blog and if it helps me to get it out, then why not?

I'll enter my ugliest school picture, then you won't have to worry about winning LOL!

Scrabble eh? i love scrabble and what a nice way to spend time with a friend-hope your friend's battle with cancer is going well-sorry to hear your family is having a hard time right- man, is something in the air,but I know what you mean, sometimes things are so hard, there just isn't a good place to start- hopefully things start to look up for you

my list is at www.jakapk.blogspot.com

We don't have to look far to realize we are fortunate in the health department. There is so much sickness. The saying "at least you've got your health" should bring an abundance of gratitude from those of us who do. I'm sorry about your family crisis. I will hope for peace.

Hi Colleen,

I'm so glad you joined in on the Thursday Thirteen. You have such a great way with words, it is always a pleasure to read you and get to know you a little better.

I, too, am thinking about your friend now. I would hold that necklace with every thought of her, and send her strength and hugs.
