Pay Day!

When my husband asked me recently what he could do to help in the garden, my answer was, “EAT! IT’S PAY DAY!”
August Gold
We get paid in corn
for our garden labor
We strike it rich
with every husk
pulled back
The sun has forged
an Aztec banquet
a silky purse
for August gold
The rain has raised
a gold rush harvest
We reap the profits
of its Midas touch
With bellies full
we dig potatoes
for poorer days
when corn is spent

I promise to get off the corn theme soon. I feel like a mother bragging about how tall her sons have grown! Wish I could share some with you, Kenju!

I remember the thrill of eating home-grown corn; can almost taste it now. Great poem and pictures.

Beautiful poem and garden, both. Nothing better than fresh corn, just picked. I envy you.

I really like the rhythm in that one. Somehow it fits the rhythm of biting, chewing, kind of urgent and hungry and slow at once--mm, I need some corn.

Like that. Totally works.

Your garden is beautiful, what a huge success!! Congratulations! Is it peaches & cream? (I apologize if I missed it!)
I tried to grow food this year, I am an utter failure at this task. We are feeding our carrots to the guinea pig. That's the only thing that made it out alive, and just barely at that. LOL

Wow! And you were away for a month. It seems to be that the best thing to go with a garden is plant it in fertile soil and then leave it alone.
